The cooperation to development is that form of international cooperation existing among Countries (or between Countries and international organizations) aiming to the development of the global system, in particular of the “weaker” areas (Wikipedia).
According to the Ministero degli Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione Internazionale (MAECI), Development cooperation, as an integral part of our country's foreign policy, has two priority bases. The first is the need for solidarity in order to guarantee all the inhabitants of the planet the protection of life and human dignity. The second is cooperation as a way of establishing, improving and consolidating relations between different countries and communities. This peer-to-peer exchange not only increases the mutual knowledge needed to understand the real needs of the local communities, but also fosters relations aimed at economic, but above all social and human, growth respecting the environment and different cultures, aiming to protect water, food and energy, so as to ensure the growth of the well-being of populations and to pursue peace among peoples.
Italian development cooperation policy also aims to pursue these objectives together with economic, cultural and security diplomacy, consolidating the role and image of Italy in the world.
The DST has made Development Cooperation one of its priorities, strongly endorsing development in the broadest sense as a mean for growth in solidarity and synergy. The DST aims at achieving widespread well-being that is sustainable from all points of view. For such an achievement, a synergic commitment between the scientific communities in general and those engaged in the study of Earth sciences is fundamental, since the sustainability of man's presence on Earth cannot be separated from the research of effective keys to understanding the past, present and future dynamics of the planet we live on.
The Department of Earth Sciences has been participating in numerous projects and initiatives whitin this frame.
