Description of the activity
The Volcanology Lab (DST - Via La Pira 4) is dedicated to the preparation, study and characterization of the different volcanic products, like lava samples and loose or lithified pyroclastic deposits. The lab is equipped for different types of sample preparation (polished sections, sample cleaning, melt and fluid inclusions) and study (grain size, morphologic and component analyses; particle or sample density; textural analysis). The lab has an extractor hood, sieves for mechanical dry sieving (from -5 to +4 phi, ½ phi), ultrasonic bath, laboratory stove, abrasive powders and papers, embedding resins and instruments like a stereomicroscope with digital camera and a plain scanner for samples and thin sections.
The lab is also equipped with a particle static analyser Malvern Morphologi 3Gs, totally dedicated to the grain size and morphometric analysis of volcanic ash and other types of geological and anthropic particulate. The instrument gives a detailed description of dimension and shape of each analysed particle, allowing a fast measure of a very large number (105 – 106) of particles. Electron microscopy and microanalysis (EDS and WDS) on the samples are performed in the dedicated departmental labs.
